NE fast-food robbery probed for link to other eatery heists
A man wielding a shotgun robbed a Northeast fast-food restaurant early on Sunday, but Philadelphia police have not definitively linked the crime to a recent series of similar incidents elsewhere in the city.
Shortly before 5 a.m. on Sunday, the suspect climbed through the drive-thru window of the Burger King, at 1624 Cottman Ave., threatened employees with a shotgun and broke into the safe and cash register, said Lt. Mark Burgmann of Northeast Detectives.
Three employees were in the restaurant. The suspect appeared to be alone. He fled the store with an undisclosed amount of cash. No injuries were reported.
The victims described the robber as black; 19 or 20 years old; 5-feet-6-inches tall; and weighing 130 to 140 pounds. He wore a dark cap with white lettering, beige jacket, black shirt and blue jeans.
According to Burgmann, detectives in the police department's East Division continue to investigate similar crimes in the Port Richmond, Kensington and North Philadelphia areas of the city. Authorities have arrested two men in conjunction with those robberies and are not sure of any connection with Sunday's heist.
The latest incident may be a copycat case.
At least six additional robberies of fast-food restaurants have been reported in the last several months.
Like the latest case, the prior incidents involved a suspect gaining access to the building via a drive-thru window. In at least one prior case, a suspect carried a shotgun, Burgmann said.
There are several disparities with Sunday's crime, however.
All of the previous cases reportedly involved McDonald's locations, as well as multiple robbers. Employees were physically restrained or beaten in previous incidents. The robbers reportedly have worn ski masks and gloves in at least one of the prior cases.
