Two people died and three were critically injured after a fast-moving fire struck a three-story home in the Frankford section of Philadelphia this morning.
Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers said the fatalities were a woman and a 6- or 7-year-old child. Five other residents of the brick home in the 4300 block of Leiper Street were taken to area hospitals, and three, including a baby, are in critical condition, Ayers said.
Two firefighters also went to the hospital, Ayers said. He said one suffered an electrical shock and one was burned.
"Fortunately, they're both going to be OK," he said.
Ayers said officials were still trying to sort out the relationships among the fire victims. He said the blaze was reported at 7:31 a.m. and declared under control at 8:06 a.m.
Neighbors said the home, where smoke was still billowing from the third floor, belongs to Ethel Hatchett, who lived there with her children and grandchildren.
"They were a very friendly family," said Bob Griffiths, who lives around the corner. "Everything knew them and liked them."
An investigation into the cause of the fire is continuing.
